I've a set of Bicycle Brainwave cards that don't work so Ii've never used them live. A few cards come apart too easily.

What do I do? buy? use? how much?

There's a few opptions with roughing, I use the spray can version, I got it from jb magic, very easy to use, as it's a spray can you can mask area you don't want to spray. It's only a small can but it will do lots of packs.

NO!

Ian Hutch put me onto Finn Jon's roughing stick.  £12.50 from Card Collection.

1) It doesn't smell
2) It lasts forever (almost)
3) It works better

Halfway down.  You'll never go back to spray...

Card Collection are great people, and Clive, the founder, is my neighbour. The shop is mind blowing, everything you can think of, card wise, and alakazam is round the corner

Ok, got the roughing stick but no instructions.

Tips gratefully received (before I destroy any cards by being a bull in a china shop). How hard do I have to press? How much surface to rub to make cards stick?

I've done a number of packs now including Jumbos & it really is the biz! I just make 3 wipes on the side I want to rough & it takes a little bit of pressure but not much. If you try it on one of the advert cards in a pack of Bikes you will see a very fine patina on the dark parts when it's coated properly. A very sharp-eyed spec would spot this coating on blue backs or black card faces if they had time to examine them, but I can't think of a trick using R&S where that's likely to happen. SOOOO much nicer to use than spray! :t
